Professional harnesses for technical and offshore crews

The harnesses NVQ supplies are Petzl fall-arrest, work-positioning and rope-access harnesses for ground, technical and offshore work — towers, metal structures, wind turbines and rope access. They are not aircraft restraint harnesses, hoist harnesses or rescue strops, and nothing on this page should be read as approved for use on a helicopter hoist or as aircraft occupant restraint. The three jobs a harness does are worth separating before comparing models. Fall arrest stops a fall and distributes the force through the body — the dorsal and sternal attachment points. Work positioning holds the worker in place at the structure so both hands are free, using the lateral belt points. Rope access means ascending and descending the rope itself, which needs a ventral attachment and a rope clamp.

The range covers all three: the VOLT LIGHT is a four-point fall-arrest and work-positioning harness for towers and metal structures, the VOLT WIND a five-point version developed for wind-turbine technicians, and the ASTRO a rope-access harness with an integrated CROLL L ventral rope clamp.

Humidity and salt are what shorten harness life offshore, and they attack the metalwork before the webbing shows anything. The VOLT WIND Offshore is the version built for that: the same five-point wind-turbine configuration, specified for humid and salty environments. Where crews work both onshore and offshore sites, it is usually cheaper to standardise on the offshore version than to run two inspection populations.

Harnesses are inspected equipment with a service life, and the record is as much a part of compliance as the harness.
